Guest Post - The Purge

The purge is a home invasion film, with the idea that one night a year all crime is legal. This is called the purge and the films follows a family who try to survive the night behind a really pathetic security system that 'looks good' more than is impenetrable.

I love the idea behind the film, the execution of the idea is severely lacking. To begin with Ethan Hawk is not the greatest actor in the world and I tend to find any film that he appears in is never going to be a great hit, this is not the breakout role for him.

All I can think is that it may have been better if it focused on more than one family, more like a set of short stories of the night. The film is not really gripping, it has just enough happening to keep you sitting in your seat but nothing to make you really say wow. The one thing that makes you think is the political notion behind it, as it's quite frightening, and with our current government trying to make the rich super rich and the poor even poorer lets just hope they don't see this film and think of it as a 'How To'!

To sum up, its watchable and not bad, but really not all that its promised to be.
